One of the man's many projects: Ceramic Dog. As he's very recognizable guitarist on many of Tom Waits albums, I wanted to check him out.

A crappy recording to be found at http://audio.jerous.org/2017-marc-ribot/ !

One of my favourite piano players: Brad Mehldau was performing near me. I'd already seen him at Ghent Jazz last year, together with John Scofield and Mark Guiliana, but now he was there with his famous trio.

Listen to the Brad Mehldau Trio!

Two awesome covers by his: My Valentine and Si Tu Vois Ma Mère

One of Belgium's finer free-spirit Dutch singers is Raymond van het Groenewoud, who kicked off his solo tour in de Roma.

You can have a listen on http://audio.jerous.org/2017-rvhg/ :)

Chick Corea seems to come here quite often (well, he has a busy schedule) I like his playing, so whenever I have the chance to go, I'll be there -- especially if it's in a beautiful and small cosy venue like Openluchttheater Rivierenhof!

Today he was there with famous bass player Avishai Cohen and drummer Marcus Gilmore.

Stream it!

When you can hear a relevant musician, whom your parents have danced to in their youths, then you know you are dealing with a living legend. Like Van Morrison :)

Also at the Lokerse Feesten was Arno, one of Belgian's rock heroes! What a day :)

Obviously, I have a recording for each of them at http://audio.jerous.org/2016-lokerse-feesten! The Arno one is of very lousy quality though.

What happens after formal elements have been addressed? Break stuff!

Vijay Iyer calls the break “a span of time in which to act. It’s the basis for breakdowns, breakbeats, and break dancing... it can be the moment when everything comes to life.” A number of the pieces here are breakdowns of other Iyer constructions. Some are from a suite premiered at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, some derive from Open City, a collaboration with novelist Teju Cole and large ensemble. The trio energetically recasts everything it touches. “Hood” is a tribute to Detroit techno pioneer Robert Hood. On “Work”, Vijay pays homage to his “number one hero”, Thelonious Monk. “Countdown” reconsiders the classic Coltrane tune inside a rhythmic framework inspired by West African music. “Mystery Woman” is driven by compound pulses which owe a debt to South Indian drumming. Fast moving and quick-witted, the group has developed a strong musical identity of its own, with an emphasis on what Iyer calls “co-constructing”, exploring all the dynamics of playing together. Yet the three players also get abundant solo space and, in a reflective moment at the album’s centre, Iyer plays a moving version of Billy Strayhorn’s “Blood Count” alone. Break Stuff, recorded in June 2014 at New York’s Avatar Studio and produced by Manfred Eicher, is the third ECM release from Vijay Iyer. It follows the chamber music recording Mutations and the film-and-music project Radhe Radhe: Rites of Holi. http://player.ecmrecords.com/vijay-2420

Listen to the Trio perform it [http://audio.jerous.org/2016-vit/].

Taj Mahal in de Roma! Listen to him and his trio at http://audio.jerous.org/2016-tmt/

The full title should be

Jools Holland & his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra Feat. Gilson Lavis and with special guest Pauline Black & Arthur "Gaps" Hendrickson from The Selecter and guest vocalists Ruby Turner, Beth Rowley & Mabel Ray

But that's a bit too long to put in the title :)

Listen to the legend here!

Maceo Parker, a funk and soul jazz saxophonist best known for his work with James Brown in the 1960s, passed by Antwerp. Perfect opportunity to dabble in some funk.

Listen to the man on http://audio.jerous.org/2016-mp/!
